It is known that for obtaining high-quality planting material (when grafting, storing, planting, growing, etc.), waxes - antitranspirants are needed to protect cuttings and seedlings of grapes, currants, roses, and other plants from dehydration. This method is widely known as "cuttings waxing", because until recently, paraffin was used to protect the plant from moisture loss. However, the coating (film) of paraffin is brittle, crumbles quickly, so it does not protect the plant from moisture loss and does not meet modern requirements for such materials.

SPF SHAR has developed and actively markets new multi-component wax-based compositions to cover plant cuttings for high-quality planting material. The wax protects rose, grape, currant, and other cuttings from moisture loss during grafting, planting, transplanting, and storage.
The coating formed by immersing plants in the wax melt provides:
- sufficient adhesion to the surface of cuttings and seedlings;
- reliable protection of plants from moisture loss;
- callus formation;
- bud development and growth of planting material;
- the flow of growth hormones from the protective coating into the plant.
The coating is thin and elastic. It does not drip, crack or crumble before the required time and serves as reliable protection of the plant from desiccation.
The composition of the antiseptic wax ensures its splitting into two layers during the cooling process. One of the layers adjacent to the surface of the cuttings provides adhesion to this surface and may contain growth hormones and other physiologically active substances. Several times thinner than the outer layer, this layer is particularly elastic and protects the cuttings from moisture loss. The outer layer is also moisture-tight, less elastic than the inner layer, but more durable.
Part of the composition of the material constituting the inner layer is contained in a thin transition layer and the outer layer. As a result, this design ensures the integrity of the moisture-proof coating on the cuttings when bending.
The developed waxes for paraffin waxing of cuttings are not phytotoxic and environmentally safe. Under the influence of the external environment and stresses occurring during plant growth, the coating breaks down after the required period of use, gets into the soil, and undergoes gradual decomposition under the influence of enzymes of soil microorganisms and other factors. SPF SHAR waxes (TU 2243-004-77793442-2007) have different properties, with different softening temperatures and melting (see table).

The color of the wax is retained for a long time. The wax is available in blue, red, yellow, green, and other colors for easy labeling of different plant varieties.
Protective films made of antitranspirants not only increase rooting but also improve the quality of the planting material of plants.
Briquettes weighing 7 - 9 kg wrapped in film and packed in cardboard boxes weighing 15 - 30 kg.
Development of non-standard (unique) composition of wax - antitranspirant is possible when ordering a batch of wax from 100 kg.
The main properties of wax - antitranspirant:
-
protects plant cuttings from drying out
-
has good adhesion
-
does not inhibit growth
- increases the % of the rooting ability of plants
-
improves the quality of planting material
Antitranspirants have been tested in various viniculture, floriculture (for waxing rose cuttings), and horticulture farms and are now produced in industrial quantities.
There are three main periods of application of grafting wax
- immediately after the mechanical connection of the cuttings to the plant.
- when transplanting a grafted plant into a nursery.
- when storing the plant after it has been taken from the nursery.
How to use wax to inoculate plants
Heat the wax to a liquid state (about 80-85 ºC), immerse the plant in the heated mass, quickly remove it, then cool it down in cold water.The use of high-quality grafting wax is one of the important components of grafting efficiency, allowing a significant increase in the percentage of rooted and successfully grafted cuttings.
The best results with improved copulation can be achieved with films SVETLITSA ™ GRAFT.
Examples of using antiseptic wax for grafting and inoculating plants
Spiking in the butt with a cut at the bottom and using grafting wax
Grafting under the bark
Full split grafting. There are two most important points:
- Alignment of the cambium layer;
- Protection against dehydration, which can be provided by sealing with grafting wax
Grapes grown in the collection garden of St. Petersburg Agrarian University in the open field, September 2007.
