Making a pond with our own hands

For the artificial pond we will need:

• Shovel

• VODYANOY or OCEAN film

• Preferably — geotextile (or dense nonwoven material — spunbond, agrospan, etc.) under the film

• A few hours of your free time

• Material for shore design - stones, water-loving plants

• Optional - aquatic plants for planting in the pond, fish

• Good weather and inspiration

Landscape designers suggest:

• Locate the pond in the penumbra so that plants and pond dwellers get enough light but do not overheat in the midday heat.

• It is best not to place the pond under deciduous trees so that the leaves do not litter the pond.

• The larger the pond, the easier it is to achieve biological balance and the easier it is to take care of. But no more than 1/10 of the area of the whole plot.

• Do not locate the reservoir in a low place because it will flood in the spring and during long rains, and it will be challenging to keep it in order.

• One of the sides should be omitted, and then in the rain, the excess water will overflow in this place and then go into the ground.

• It is desirable that the pond was visible from the house (firstly, you can often admire it, and secondly, ensure that children do not take water procedures in inappropriate weather).

• The artificial pond looks better if its far bank "elevated," for this, you can use the earth from the excavation.

• The depth of the pond, where you plan to plant aquatic plants or keep fish, should be at least 60 - 80 cm.

• Choose reliable films for waterproofing, the repair of the reservoir will require a lot of trouble.

How to make a pond with their own hands?

1. At the chosen place we mark the contours of the reservoir - we spread out a rope or a hose on the ground.

2. When the result is satisfied, take a shovel and dig. Usually, make a pond from 0.6 to 1.5 m deep. For fish and aquatic plants is quite enough depth of 80 cm. Do not make the banks too steep otherwise, the ground will eventually slide. The slope should not exceed 60 ° C. You can make a stepped bottom and then place containers with aquatic plants on these steps.

3. Thoroughly trampling out the bottom..

4. Pour a layer of sand 5-10 cm and put geotextile. You can do it only on the bottom, or you can also cover the sides. These measures will protect the film from damage by plant roots and harmful moles.

5. Laying the selected film: Vodyanoy or Ocean. You can calculate the amount of film as follows: length = length of the pond + two depths + 0.5 m on each edge; width = width of the pond + two depths + 0.5 m on each edge. For example, a 6 × 7.1 m package of Waterman will be enough to make a 3 × 4 meter pond with a depth of 1 m or a 3.5 × 4.5 meter pond with a depth of 0.8 m.

6. Spread the film from the center to the edges and begin to fill the pit with water gradually. First, pour 1/3 of the volume, after 3-6 hours - the rest, so that the air could escape from under the film and the soil to settle under the weight of wa

Now begins the most interesting - design of the reservoir. It is advisable to cut the edges of the film the next day when the film will finally take the shape of our pit. Around the pond, we make a groove just below the ground level, see the diagram. Fix and cover the cut edge of the foil. Behind the beautifully laid stones, we plant water-loving plants.

Planting plants in the pond is better to postpone for a day or two so that the water has settled, warmed up, the bottom and shores finally settled under the weight of water.

How to design an artificial pond?
